TWOP Stargate Lexicon

My normal haunt for Stargate discussion is a one thread subforum within "televisionwithoutpity.com". We're a strange, eclectic, friendly group. But if you don't haunt there, the rest of this journal entry probably will bore you. ;-)

I've been on TWoP for a while now, and have seen several inside jokes develop within the forum, some of which I even find confusing, and I've noticed some others also scratch their heads about. Many of them were just innocent comments that took on lives of their own...and some TWoPsters have apparently long memories.

This is meant to be a lexicon to some of the expressions and abbreviations used by Stargate fans, and the TWoPster fans in particular. If there's something not on the list, or you still don't get it, jump in and ask, we don't bite...well, most of us don't (not sure about Bob...but you'll find out about him below). And don't let that stop you from jumping in with your own thoughts either. The more the merrier! Get off that lurker couch potato couch!

The Definitions

1,000 Nuns (often paired with hate of the passion of 1,000 burning nuns) = I have disappointingly learned that we were not the originator of this phrase. But we can trace our roots to this expression within the thread. Michael Shanks made a comment in a dvd commentary (S7 Revisions) on how the cast hated the hazmat suits they wore with the passion of a dozen burning suns. I accidentally recapped it as 1,000 suns. Someone spun off from that on something they hated, calling it a thousand nuns via a typo. And now, TWoPsters hate something with the passion of a thousand nuns.

Anyway, that's just happens to be how *I* feel about it. What do you think? = The line Daniel speaks every time Jack O'Neill reloops in time in the episode "Window of Opportunity". It's just a fun alternative to IMHO.

aaRUUUgula = (tm elle) the sound for the "Iron Maiden" (see "maritime vessel" entries)

Black Widow Curse = not unique to TWoP, even AT has commented on how Samantha Carter seems to have a curse of the black widow around her, because every guy she has a romantic spark with ends up dying...Martouf, Narim, Orlin, Jonas I, even AU Jacks with AU Sams. We have yet to discover why Pete Shanahan has been immune (though Sam did warn him in "Chimera").

Bori = name christened by some of the TWoPsters who find the newest Stargate villains, the Ori...well, boring. Boring Ori = Bori.

The Brain = three posters, buttersister, smgkansas, and totalTVaddict (me), ended up cross posting the exact same thoughts at the exact same time quite often within a short time period. It's gotten to the point one of us will take some time off because one of the other two will make our point for us. One of the three (sadly, I can't recall which one...since we all seemed to have the same idea), made a comment that it was like we were sharing a brain. Others started teasing and calling us the Brain...including threatening to sing the theme song to Pinky and... "The Brain" has begun a manifesto of what we want to see happen to the show. Top of the list is teamy goodness, good character interaction, consistent canon (Jacob and Selmak blended how many years ago?), the return of much beloved thoughtlessly killed off characters (Martouf, Janet, Jacob), etc. We plan on using our mental powers and storming Bridge with the manifesto, but keep being distracted by the Pretty.

Bridge = Bridge Studios in Vancouver Canada is where both Stargate shows are filmed. It was so named because the location they own/lease used to be where a firm existed involved in aptly enough, building bridges...most famously, the Golden Gate in San Francisco. The term is used collectively to account for the production companies Acme Shark, Double Secret, Gekko productions, and the general production crew. Bridge can sometimes be synonymous with TPTB (The Powers That Be)

Com'trya = the Stargate TWoPster welcoming greeting to Newbies. It actually comes from an episode of the show, "Tin Men", and was the greeting the alien/robot Harlan used. O'Neill accurately translated it as "Aloha".

Daniel's butt, (as in Codger and) = There is a fair number of Stargate TWoPsters who appreciate the particular Pretty that is Daniel Jackson/Michael Shanks. And sometimes links to pics of a particular...asset are provided. TWoPster Codger (who's more of a Vala fan himself) protested about these non-warned links to clown pictures (see EvilClown) and Daniel's butt loudly and often (okay, maybe a few people were just linking to more butt pics to tease him). One TWoPster (ShirleyFeeney?) happened to do a google search of "Daniel's butt" and Codger's protests made the top five (we don't ask what else was included in that list...it was likely pretty scary). So now, as has been brought up from time to time, Codger, to his utter annoyance, has been permanently linked to Daniel's butt. ;-)

Don't say Ka until you've tried it = taken from a line in "The First Ones", Ka is an alien language word for "no". Basically, it just stand for give it a shot before dismissing the possibility.

The Drinking Game = it has been joked that some common things on Stargate should be made into a drinking game...(take a shot or swig when you see/hear something happening on the show). I started one and several other TWoPsters joined in. You can find the full list of the Drinking Game compiled here

The Enabler = most often refers to Codger, because he can be a source of great Stargate info...such as the two for one sale Best Buy had on Stargate dvds a while ago. Has also been used for other TWoPsters who help our "Stargate habit".

EvilClowns = Um, another "you kinda have to be there", but essentially one or two TWoPsters (including ShirleyFeeney) are very good at posting links to pictures...however, to express their annoyance at some points, sometimes they will be pictures of clowns. It's just a way of teasing/snarking at others...since many are frightened/traumatized by the appearance of Bozo and the Stephen King It character.

Fan Wack = (tm mostly harmless/AngusCrow/anstar) born from a poor mostly harmless's innocent typo of "fan wank", it has come to mean 1) as AngusCrow will attest from personal experience, inflicting virtual bodily harm with virtual hard objects (such as frosty beverages in chilled mugs) across that handy wormhole known as the Internet. ex: "Do not incur TwoPsters' wrath, or be subject to the fan wack!" (or in the alternative, EvilClowns). 2) the metaphorical smack a fan needs to give the continuity/ cohesiveness /logic of a plot line or point of canon to get it to make sense (a more extreme fan wank) (see also Hooch and Fan Wackers in "food" section below)

The Flag = can refer to two different things, but both involved being the only thing separating one of the Pretty from...sharing more of themselves than maybe they feel comfortable. ;-) Amanda Tapping had a photo shoot where she was naked except for being wrapped in an American flag. This photo was somewhat controversial because of many Americans' sensitivities to the national emblem, but others just enjoy the "Pretty" of Ms. Tapping. The other instance is from Season 8 "Threads" when Daniel Jackson reappears after an encounter with the ascendeds...nude. Jack provides him a flag (notably NOT choosing the American one as an homage to the Tapping incident). The Daniel discussion is only referencing the Pretty.

FlagShip Episode = reference to Season 4's Divide & Conquer by denizens of ShirleyFeeney's Ship (see "ships, barges and maritime vessels", below.)

Furling Face = Reference to Michael Shanks/Daniel Jackson's beard in early Season 9. TPTB at the network level were worried audience members would confuse MS and new cast member BenB, so they ordered the beard. As goes with the Stargate motto, the topic of the beard has been a source of discussion, and some have called it "Furling Face" after the unseen but possibly fuzzy alien species referenced in the show.

The Great Rewatch = Started after the ending of Season Ten, the Twopsters have determined to rewatch all the episodes of SG-1 in order (give or take), doing an episode each Friday. It may take four years, but we're determined to get them all, discussing ships/nonships, plotlines, plot arcs, characterization, favorite lines, and of course...the hair

Guido = a "friend" of Codger's, Guido is a hitman he ostensibly hired to kill all of us for learning one of his secrets...and sadly, I no longer remember the secret. However, Guido and I are now friends, and his number is on the Brain's speeddial, so Codger can no longer threaten the poor other TWoPsters with his wrath.

Happy X Day = During the midseason S9 hiatus, as a way of passing the time and to counter bemoaning the loss of Jack, some TWoPsters decided to accentuate the positive and remember favorite moments of each of the SG-1 characters. It started with the team members, Happy Teal'c Day, Happy Mitchell Day, Happy Daniel Day, and grew from there to recurrings. There was even a Chicken Little Day to bemoan ridiculous scenarios that may happen in SG-1 (it was meant as a joke...we hope TPTB didn't read it and get ideas). During the midseason10 hiatus, it was reduxed into various forms to alleviate our boredom.

Hot, Sweaty, Dimly Lit = almost needs no definition, but usually is a reference to "Beneath the Surface", "Jolinar's Memories", "The Devil You Know", or "Prisoners", where the setting is extremely dark and the characters are not exactly spring fresh. See also, "the Pretty".

It's All About the Hair = This is the Stargate TWoPster motto. Why? To quote Daniel: "I have no idea". Its origins predate my time on the boards, but let's face it, there's a lot of discussion and comments by even the PTB regarding the various hair styles (and lack therof) by the Stargate cast members. No matter how serious the discussions can sometimes get, eventually it can all be boiled down to the motto: "Stargate: It's All About the Hair"

Jello Wrestling and Volleyball matches = back in the S8/S9 hiatus, Codger started a Stargate all-star jello wrestling team for the ladies of Stargate, which was countered by a Volleyball match for the men. It's basically a large dip in the shallow end that occasionally gets referenced now (though Codger maintains it is for anthropological purposes, not blatant looking at the Pretty). The jello wrestling is from a line Teal'c speaks in the episode "Ascension". The volleyball...um, I guess because it's something to do near pools and water? It's pure fun, y'all.

Jonas I = not to be confused with the Season 6 cast member, Jonas Quinn, Jonas I was a one shot guest appearance in season 1 "The First Commandment". He was Sam's ex-fiancé and had delusions of godhood while heading an SG team...killed the same episode.

L'il Doc / Little Doc = Dr. Janet Fraiser, chief medical officer of the base for seasons 1-7. She and her actress Teryl Rothery are between five feet and five foot two inches tall. She is also known as the "Napoleonic Power Monger" because of a comment Jack made in the S3 episode "The Crystal Skull".

Little Red Riding Hood = (LRRH) a name given to Adria, a season ten character, because of her costuming in the season premiere. See also, OriVitro

Lively Discussion v. Bashing = as Angus Crow has defined it: ""lively discussion" is what you get when you say the words "Sam" and "leadership" in the same sentence. "Bashing" is what you get when you say the words "Pete" and "Shanahan" in the same sentence" [or Hailey, or Felger or Jonas]. Of course, MMV, because each one of these characters have their advocates on the board as well (for example, I like Pete). Most topics on TWoP run "the lively discussion" variety...before they become about the hair.

The Manifesto = See The Brain

The Meetings = often held in the basement of the Barge, these various meetings, complete with cake and cocktails are in the realm of 12 step programs, although instead of trying to get rid of the interest, it enables it. They are held for the various minority held viewpoints in Stargate fandom. People who like "The Other Guys" or "Wormhole X-Treme" as episodes, or particular non-popular characters, such as Hailey and Pete Shanahan. I humbly admit I have been a founder of many of these groups, and been surprised at the large turnout at several of these meetings!

Melty People (tm totaltvaddict) Reference to characters who liquify in a painful death in Season Six's "Metamorphosis" after Nirrti manipulates their DNA. [I really hate the melty people. *shudder*]

Mongo = Cameron Mitchell; this came from an interview with Ben Browder. He made a joke about what Mitchell should be called, referencing "Mongo". The nickname has stuck on TWoP, but in an affectionate way.

NotDaniel = Jonas Quinn. See also Tintin. Member of SG-1, Jonas's character was the cultural liaison in the absence of Daniel Jackson during Season 6. Although most TWoPsters profess no animosity towards poor Jonas, several share the opinion that the character was not developed much as a unique individual, but rather as someone in Daniel's office, using Dr. Jackson's notes, and just filling Daniel's place, hence the unfortunate nickname.

Not That Way (NTW) = A standard TWoP statement to avoid misinterpreting something as an entendre for ship/slash/whatever floats your boat. ;-) Otherwise, we sometimes go off on tangents...well, we kind of do that anyway.

OriVitro = The TWoPster name for the spawn who will likely appear in Season 10, based on Vala's pregnancy at the end of Season 9.

Peep Peril = Upon the arrival of the long awaited Jack (and other) Stargate action figures, poster Shirley Feeney started providing pictures of her Jack doll with some plush "Peep" (yes, you read that right, the marshmallow candies) figures. The photos are hilarious, and inspired a lot of possibilities from the TWoPsters. One poster offered her Picard and Mulder action figures for backup to poor Jack, another started incorporating the suggestions and storylines into a crackfic and "Peep Peril" was born.

The Pretty = does this really need a definition? We are all cognizant of the fact that the cast of Stargate is extraordinarily good looking...including many guest/recurring characters. The Pretty often refers to our core cast members, but is not limited to that. Individual taste of posters can alter who specifically is referenced. No one's ever done a "who's prettiest" on TWoP, but like someone pointed out in a discussion of early season v. late season Daniel and/or Mitchell, it's like comparing models of Jaguars.

Pri-clops = (tm anstar's junior snarker) nickname given to the one-eyed Prior in Crusade and a few episodes of Season Ten.

RoboDoc = Dr. Carolyn Lam, so called by some TWoPsters (like Idiotboy) because Lexa Doig, the actress who plays her, was best known for her role as a robot/android on "Andromeda". Also because Carolyn's character has been seen as cold and "robotic" by many...especially those still mourning Janet Fraiser.

Six Pack (of Ba'als) = reference to clone storyline for Ba'al in Seasons Nine and Ten...kind of a play on words considering Cliff Simon's former gig as "Mr. South Africa."

See, see, see, see! = a reader should picture a poster jumping up and down in a little adamant dance when reading this expression. It comes directly from the episode "One False Step", where Daniel and Jack are having an agitated discussion with their irritability augmented by an alien sound.

SloMo = usually references two Season Six episodes, "Allegiance" and "Smoke and Mirrors" where scenes feature Richard Dean Anderson moving in slow motion. (And some people say Season Six has no redeeming qualities, heh).

Squee'd = (tm anstar) a TWoPster fangirl/boy cry of joy/excitement; though not exclusively, it is often used in appraisal of something on the "shallow end"

Spot Dion = Part of the Drinking Game...and predating it. Dion Johnstone has been a recurring cast member on Stargate, playing multiple roles, many of them in heavy makeup. He was the original Chaka the Unas, the Fifth Man Lt. Tyler, the 2IC in that Apophis training camp episode, etc., etc. ShirleyFeeney is the spot Dion mistress.

The Stargate Motto = See "It's All About the Hair."

Super Sekrit Mission = What certain beloved characters are doing since we aren't seeing them in later episodes/movies because they are Not! dead! See also, Virtual Season 11

THAT Story = I refuse to link to it or even link to the post that links to it. Suffice to say, it is about the er...trying to put it diplomatically...er, oh hell, it's the worst story the TWoPsters have come across in fanfic (and no, we have no desire to find one to top it, we ran out of brain bleach). The pairing is Cassie/Janet/Sam. 'Nuff said, no? Aleca has ordered it never mentioned onlist again, but ShirleyFeeney occasionally ignores the ban, to the other TWoPsters' horror.

Tintin = Jonas Quinn, an SG-1 team member during S6. Named by Idiotboy after a character in a European comic book. See also, notDaniel

Tok'ra Spice/Tok'ra Barbie = Anise, a character in Season 4 who was brought in by pressure for network executives to create a "7 of 9" effect on Stargate. The attempt was a dismal failure, rumored to be hated by the people involved in the show and derided by many fans. Anise disappeared mid-season 4, but there are some who love her. The behind the scenes story of Anise was mocked by the Powers That Be in a scene of "Wormhole X-Treme".

Virtual Season 11 = the TWoPsters have decided that we need another season of Stargate, one with Jack's presence more noticeable, and the revelation that Jacob, Janet, and Martouf are just off on a super-sekrit mission. BigBeagle has started the storyline here and anyone/everyone is welcome to jump in.

What? What? = an homage to the witty repartee between Jack and Daniel

What I learned from Stargate another event born out of boredom, various TwoPsters have compiled a list of things learned from watching the show, such as "Jack will always save you." The list has been compiled both at buttersister's and peacegood's live journals.

The Wonder Twins = Daniel Jackson and Samantha Carter, the two high I.Q. characters of the team that are used by the writers for scientific/historical exposition and great leaps of logic. The affectation is usually used fondly and also refers to the close friendship (some may say sibling-like) between the pair.

Wor'd = (tm buttersister) the Stargate TWoPster version of "I totally agree with this."

Bob and the Balls of Hate

In some early spoilers of Season 10, the news about Claudia Black's pregnancy being written into the show (see OriVitro) caused TWoPster Codger to become apoplectic with rage. Bob's spawning (Since I was a spoilerphobe at the time, I do not know the full details).

Since then, people have kind of looked after and played with Bob. He's become a mascot of sorts to the Stargate TWoPsters as a center point of feared spoilers and speculation.

Bob is the most well known of the balls of hate, but he has some playmates, most have been formed from the same S10 spoilers, but others created from their posters' various personal pet peeves about the show.

Alisa for Elsbeth78
I Can't Believe It's Not Buttersister for Buttersister (also known as ICBINB)...renamed Bittersister
Pooky Keen for Peachy Keen
Willy Pete for Big Beagle

The Bands

Not a take off of Mitchell and his "bringing the band back together". There's just so many weird names in Stargate, some TWoPsters have commented they make good names for garage bands. There have been several proposed bands, but a few that have really stuck have included:

Apophis and the Jaffa
Dammit! Daniel
The Devoted
Nick and the Giant Aliens
Nem Nemesis

This most recent hiatus (between S9-S10), some talented TWoPsters have titled albums, songlists, lyrics, and even some awesome looking album covers.

Predating the bands, the TwoPsters developed some Christmas carols (for some reason, starting them OCTOBER of 2005). The first post of them is here A Stargate Christmas

The Barges, the Ships, and other Maritime Vessels:

Stargate fandom has been known to fracture into various factions, depending on like/dislike of a character and/or pairing. In some forums, this has turned into pitched battles. Here on TWoP, the posters have taken a different route. Somehow on the lovely River of DeNial (renamed D'Nial) in TWoP Stargate fandom, various maritime vessels have developed.

The vessels were already floating when I joined TWoP, and to be honest, I was a little intimidated by the insider nature of them. But I've since learned these vessels serve two simple purposes: 1) it's a shorthand for explaining your general philosophy on some general fandom ideas (i.e., you're on ShirleyFeeney's ship, you think Jack and Sam are made for each other) 2) they're a "virtual place" to gather and party with like minded (and non-like minded folks).

Some of the ships have developed with names based on the poster who first developed them. But don't wait for an invitation, jump on board if you have a mind, and don't think of staying exclusive. People jump around on the various vessels depending on the parties to be had. Feel free to create your own if you notice something missing. They are often docked side by side, so people can go "boat crawling" among the vessels if they so choose. This is done in alphabetical order:

The Banana Boat
christened as an alternate locale to the S.S. Tin Can't (below), this is for people who like...or at least don't mind...Jonas and think Season Six is all around okay. Christened by Nomad, the Banana Boat's battle cry is: "We Think Jonas Was Sort Of Okay, Really." The Banana Boat will have a small tv to the side devoted to the weather channel and sometimes engages in water weather balloon fights with it's rival sister ship, the Tin Can't. Deo! D-e-o..

S.S. Beatin' Pete (ETA: currently undergoing new name suggestions)
Aircraft carrier sized vessel to fit all TWoPsters who wish to discuss their extreme dislike of Sam Carter's boyfriend/fiance in Seasons 7-8. They may borrow torture implements from the "Tin Can't".

Buttersister's Friendship Barge (aka the Barge, Buttersister Barge)
The locale for individuals who don't see/can't see a romantic relationship between and among the various team members of SG-1. This includes, but is not exclusive to Jack & Sam, Jack & Daniel, Teal'c & Cameron, Cameron & Lam, Daniel & Vala, etc. etc. Subtext and fanfic decisions are up to individual members, this mostly deals with canon relationships. It provides temporary refuge for those who seek to escape discussion on a particular pairing, and also has several permanent luxurious suites where some TWoPsters remain (I have a lovely one decorated in blue). TWoPster buttersister commissioned the vessel, hence it bears her name.

S.S. Dala
created by katygrl, this maritime vessel is where she (and others) enjoys dreaming about and seeing a potential romantic relationship ship Daniel Jackson and Vala Mal Doran. I hear she has some great original cocktails.

Daniel/Teal'c friendship cruise ship
marina to & purple hippo set about building a vessel to celebrate the friendship of these two original SG-1 members Daniel Jackson and Teal'c. The vessel has/had a a large library and a meditation room with mondo candles available now for visitation. And the vessel is fully fireproofed. Apparently the D/T friendship cruise has annexed itself permanently to the mastership "Friendship Barge", so all may enjoy the library and kel'no'reem goodness.

Iron Maiden
the Iron Maiden is an Asgard shielded, fully armored vessel on D'Nile that avoids any and all spoilers to the upcoming (or already aired in other countries) episodes and/or movies. Although many of the crew officers such as Peachy Keen and anstar are affiliated with the "Friendship Barge", I'm certain shipper spoilerphobes also would be welcomed to a berth. The Iron Maiden hosts a large screening room to while away the time before eps air and distract from the spoiler pics and black bars by airing classic episodes and hosting screen cap contests. When too many "black bars" (how TWoP hides spoiler contents) appear in the thread, the Iron Maiden will sound its horn..."aaRUUUgula" (Because as elle points out, it's catchier than the old "Aaoogah" sound it used to make. Plus, I'm not sure, but it may also be a way to ward off/warn Harry Maybourne).

Jack-n-Daniel
aizjanika first commissioned this vessel for fellow slashers to counter the ship and the barge, but has since abandoned it to either discuss serious issues or take laps in the shallow end. Knowing aizjanika, I'm sure she wouldn't mind any visitors or crew members taking up the slasher cause.

The Pool and the Cabanas
The location of the "Pool" has never been firmly established in our virtual land. It is either on the barge, or on the nearby dockside. It has a deep end for serious discussion, and the extremely large "shallow end". The Shallow End was expanded between Season 8 and Season 9 to make room for the Farscape fans coming over to ogle new guest/permanent cast members Ben Browder and Claudia Black. Making sure the pools are clean and drinks are topped (and also staffing every one of the vessels listed here) are various Cabana Boys and Girls who bear remarkable resemblances to the various characters of Stargate...in various modes of dress.

Poor Pete
Inner tube inhabited by the Pete Shanahan defender(s) [possibly only me and Peachy Keen], who paddle around the river. You can recognize their arrival by their plaintive cry, "he isn't *that* bad. No, really!" Spends most of its time avoiding being crushed by the juggernaut Bashin' Pete.

River of D'Nial
Obviously not an original TWoP concept, the River of DeNial seems an appropriate place for fans of Stargate, considering the Egyptian roots of the original Stargate villains. The various vessels float about on this body of water. UPDATE: The River has be rechristened D'Nial / D'Nile by proclamation.

Sam/Cam Dinghy of Devotion
This surprisingly large kayak, er dinghy was commissioned by ChillintheMost with mnemeth, FishSpeaker and KiwiRaptorUK as mates because these two just "look so cute together". They're still organizing their crew, but I hear there's some great mongo...er, congo lines and other dancing.

Sam-n-Janet
Not much is known about this mysterious vessel, though it is rumored to be piloted by Idiotboy, who adores these two fine ladies of Stargate. The boat is not usually moored, most likely often at sea to search for the return of the lovely Janet Fraiser.

ShirleyFeeney's Ship, the "Ship"
Appropriately, fans of a romantic relationship between the characters of Jack O'Neill and Samantha Carter tend to hang out on a large ship that floats around the harbor. It has lovely beverages, and can be a wartime vessel, flinging shippy screencaps out of heart shaped cannons. ShirleyFeeney has been one of the more vocal Jack/Sam shippers on the TWoP forum, and may have commissioned the vessel, hence the "Ship" bears her name. ShirleyFeeney has mentioned some various secret initiation rituals before becoming a member of the crew, but I don't think they're problematic for serious fans of the Jack&Sam cause. The flagShip episode is "Divide & Conquer", and will apparently lead to bakeoffs between ship denizens and members of the barge.

SPOON (Society for Preservation Of O'Neills)
A group/ship/suite/docking point supporting the lost and perhaps found romance of Jack and Sara O'Neill. Post-season eight barbeques in D.C. are common.

S.S. Tin Can't = (see Tintin above)
Christened by PeachyKeen after a name contest, the Tin Can't is the refuge for the TWoPsters who really really don't know what they're going to do when Season Six comes round on the Great Rewatch because Jonas Quinn onscreen makes them climb the walls. Tin Can't promises to have a direct pipeline to the hooch made in the Iron Maiden engine room. Hopefully these denizens may be distracted by lots of drinking, and others pointing out the benefits of Season Six...like SloMo Jack. Or, at least they'll hang around, play darts (guess the target), and pop in dvds of the Daniel seasons. They also have a cloning machine for Jonas and torture implements...and it's best not to ask questions. ;-) Sometimes they engage in water weather balloon battles with the Banana Boat.

S.S. Vala Rules
Fans of Snarky, Exuberant, Sultry Vala Mal Doran hang out on the S.S. Vala Rules. TWoPster BigBeagle determined this larger than life character needed a vessel all her own, so this boat has been established on the River of DeNial. Codger is First Mate and Cruise Director (Julie McCoy) of the S.S. Vala Rules, tooting its horn for good Vala episodes. Although BigBeagle has ordered "No Karaoke", Codger often hides that sign and brings out the machine. Update: apparently Codger has worn BigBeagle down and karaoke is now allowed. BigBeagle's also ordered earplugs to remain in constant supply. They are known to have comfy chairs and big screen tvs. Even only quasi fans of Vala (like me) will board from time to time, because they have great parties on this vessel. ;-)

The Abbreviations

RDA = Richard Dean Anderson, the (former) executive producer of the show and actor who plays Jack O'Neill

BenB = Ben Browder, the actor who plays Cameron Mitchell (so done to not confuse him with the other BB, Beau Bridges)

BeauB = Beau Bridges, the actor who plays General Hank Landry (so done to not confuse him with the other BB, Ben Browder)

BFF = Best Friend Forever

BoB = Boys of Bridge, a reference to the producers of Stargate

CB = Claudia Black, the actor who plays Vala Mal Doran

CoTG = Children of the Gods. The Stargate SG-1 pilot episode

RCC = Robert C. Cooper, executive producer, writer, and show runner of Stargate SG-1

PdL = Peter DeLuise, writer, director, and producer of Stargate SG-1 (yes, also the son of Dom DeLuise and formerly actor of Seaquest DSV and 21 Jump Street)

DelPJ = the DeLorean Puddle Jumper, a time ship discovered and used by SG-1 in Season 8

EDM = Ex Deus Machina, a Season 9 episode involving Ba'al and the Trust

CJ = Christopher Judge, the actor who plays Teal'c; may also (but rarely) refer to Citizen Joe, a Season 8 episode starring the actor who played Homer Simpson

GJ = Gary Jones, the actor who plays...well, he only got his name as Chief Master Sergeant Walter Harriman last season. Officially before that he was known as the Technician, but was also known via nametags as Walter Davis, Norman Davis....and most commonly referred to as "Chevron Guy", since his dialogue mostly consists of "Chevron #, Encoded".

IMHO = In My Humble Opinion

M&M = Paul Mullie and Joe Mallozzi, two writers/producers of Stargate who co-wrote several episodes

CN = Corin Nemec, the actor who played Jonas Quinn

OT = Off Topic, getting out of the subject of Stargate, or changing the topic

PU = Prometheus Unbound, a Season 8 episode, Vala's first appearance

MS = Michael Shanks, the actor who plays Daniel Jackson

TPTB = The Powers That Be; often referring to the producers at Bridge Studios, where Stargate is made and filmed; It can also refer to Sci-Fi/Sky One/Space, the main networks that air the program, or MGM/Sony, who owns the franchise...and sometimes all of the above. NOTE: Can also refer to a S9 episode of the same name.

TSTMNBN = The Show That Must Not Be Named, i.e. Farscape. A spin on the Voldemort (he who must not be named) character in Harry Potter, Farscape became an unmentionable word in the Stargate forum because pre Season-9 promotions were really pushing the arrival of Ben Browder, formerly the star of "Farscape", to practically the exclusion of all else. Veteran watchers were becoming sick of hearing about the new actor (obviously not the intent of PTB), and so the acronym developed. It is used mostly in jest now. No one's going to shoot you if you use the word "Farscape"...I think. ;-)

WoO = Window of Opportunity, a season 4 episode, usually recognized by fans who don't know titles as the "Groundhog Day" one.

YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary, i.e., the way I see it, your opinion/view may differ

Other References
Stargate's homages (i.e. ripoffs, homage is a PdL term) of other parts of popular culture is extreme and too numerous to list here. But for TWoPster purposes, I would be remiss to not mention:

The Simpsons, since it's Jack O'Neill's and RDA's favorite show. He even believes Montgomery Burns is a Goa'uld ("Citizen Joe"). TwoPsters may homage it with a well placed d'oh or other quotations.

The Wizard of Oz is an obsession with Jack O'Neill. Why? I have no idea, but you'll find quotes of it throughout Stargate.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is often "homaged" on TwoP, likely to be even worse now that the show has incorporated the Arthurian legend (Cameron Mitchell has referenced the movie in mentioning the "Knights who say "Ni").

The Princess Bride, especially "I do not think that means what you think it means" and a mangled paraphrasing of the wedding scene of mawwiage, whenever the discussion moves to "twue wuv."

The Food of Stargate
The TwoPsters like to throw a party, and aside from the non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages that are constantly available, there is food. Often dessert. You won't find the weird stuff Nazi Odo and his minions served or that mush in "Beneath the Surface" or "Prisoners", though we may serve oatmeal (more likely in the form of my grandmother's oatmeal cookie recipe than what Jack ate).

Bananas/Jonas's palette = One of Corin Nemec's ideas was to have alien Jonas Quinn fascinated by Earth culture and diet. Not only would he frequently watch the weather channel, he would often be drinking tea or eating bananas or some other food or beverage. This characteristic he developed proved very difficult for the directors to film around because takes would be inconsistent in when a bite was taken/how much food was left. According to the S6 dvd commentaries, an actual memo was issued by Bridge banning food/beverage consumption unless it related to the plot. The most infamous "banana scene" sometimes referenced on TwoP was a bonding moment between Teal'c and Jonas in "Descent", when Teal'c wonders if Jonas is suggesting an "alien conspiracy".

Beer = a favorite of Jack's. He finds it's a good replacement for food. He's drank Budweiser in early seasons (such as the pilot), and Heineken in Season 7. He also uses it as a fire extinguisher/marinade and has shot back a cold one with Hank Landry in S9. Mitchell offered Daniel Coors Light in Ethon. In an informal survey, most of the TwoPsters actually prefer other libations, but we keep plenty of beer on stock for if/when Jack or Cam stop by. ;-)

Bovine lactose/Teal'c's palette = Although he claimed to the utter enjoyment of many TwoPsters to not wish to partake of bovine lactose (milk) at any temperature, he greatly enjoyed ice cream in "Unnatural Selection". Teal'c has been seen enjoying copious amounts of fruit, corn dogs, and other large portions of items. Our favorite is still the frozen bovine lactose, though.

Cake = Cake is apparently reserved for special occasions on SG-1. When Carter was scheduled to be released from the infirmary after her harrowing ordeal on Prometheus, Jack mentioned there would be cake at his prompting. He's also questioned the importance of festivities on other occasions by asking if there will be cake. Carter baked, er, bought, er, brought a cake to Cassie's sweet sixteen. So cake is the dessert of choice on special occasions on TWoP. The thing you should know is that there is always a special occasion on TWoP, so there's almost always cake.

Hooch and Fan Wackers = Anguscrow started brewing hooch for us to enjoy in a rewatch of SG-1 after the S10 finale. After (s)he was beaned with some hooch in a "fan wack" by stillshimpy in another thread, fan wackers started being tossed around as an alternative name for the hooch...and/or crackers to enjoy with it.

Jell-O = Stargate has some kind of fetish with jello. Sam has been seen grabbing blue jello in a few different episodes. Jack, Cameron, and Daniel have all been seen with red jello. Even McKay in Atlantis complained there was no blue jello in the commissary in an episode. Plus the jello wrestling thing mentioned above. It's just an inside wink/nod within the show, and many fans homage that in their comments.

MREs = notoriously bad. In season 1, Daniel noted that even the Macaroni and Cheese tasted like chicken. According to Sam in FH2, the commissary food isn't much better. We don't tend to serve them in the River of DeNial

Pie = O'Neill has been known to enjoy pie on more than one occasion. The most noticeable pie incident was in Urgo, when the alien device inside SG-1's head enhanced their senses of smell and taste and enjoyed a lot of desserts. As Urgo put it: "I want to live. I want to experience the universe and I want to eat pie." An idea with which neither Jack nor the TwoPsters can disagree.

Pineapple = one of the directors of photography, Will Waring, tries to squeeze a pineapple into episodes where he's filming. Nobody really knows why. It seems to just be a thing, like directors Martin Wood and Peter DeLuise have cameos of themselves in most episodes they direct.

Powerbars = that and chocolate have been Daniel Jackson and others way of avoiding MREs. They also serve to win friends and influence people, such as belligerent Unas.

The Yellow Ones = Thor's favorite of the Asgard cuisine, which are small geometric pieces of food. Sam didn't seem to share his enjoyment of the morsel. I don't think any of the TWoPsters have indulged.

For more info on the various characters' diets, I suggest you check out one of the many Stargate fan sites that are out there. Personally, I recommend the Stargate Solutions Wiki listings for each individual SG-1 character, such as Teal'c Mitchell or Sam or Daniel or Jack, but I'm totally biased since I've volunteered some articles there.

Hee, I'm not sure if I should be proud of creating the lexicon, or very, very scared that I remembered so much.

Ah, the Daniel cabana boy has just arrived, with chocolate cake, my favorite! Merci beaucoup!

As for the mysterious Sam-n-Janet vessel, I may have to do more 'splainin', I see. (As in "See? See? See?") Honestly ... how can I sleep after reading this? I'm higher than a kite.

Scared of my anal retentiveness, or the TWoPsters? We're not a cult...really! LOL.

I find TWoP a lot less scary than some of the other forums. And during hiatus, instead of bemoaning speculative spoilers ad nauseum (well, we do that too, but not as much), we end up doing goofy things, like making up garage bands and having Happy X Days. When the season airs, there'll be more "normal" discussions.

If it's the anal retentiveness that scares you, yeah, I get scared of that too. Sometimes I can really relate to Adrian Monk. "It's a blessing, and a curse."

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I have to post there sometimes. I just get lost in the format. I only belong to the scary places ;)

Oh! And I'm working on your icon fic now.

[identity profile] aurora-novarum.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
The one thread TWOP format can get confusing, especially if you were weaned on the other "a topic for everything and everything in its topic." But that way confuses *me* because I have to switch gears and can't write down all my myriad of thoughts in one post.

Icon fic? Oh Squee! I've never had a fic written for me before. Bounces in excitement. (And I'm not disappointed that "my" fic isn't up at the [livejournal.com profile] tealc_ficathon yet. I've always considered that a bonus. The challenge was writing for someone else.

And heh, did you see? I finally took the plunge into the gengate place. ;-)

[identity profile] moonshayde.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
The GenGate is terribly quite right now, unfortunately. Most people have jumped ship *sniffle*

Oh, someone is looking for Season 9 fic though. Gen. Friendship. I wanted to rec your A Friend in Need but I haven't found the link yet. If you scroll back, maybe you can give that person the link.

I hope you like the icon fic. I'm a little burnt out from A Priori so I am not sure if it will fly. And I am sort of cheating. I am combining your icon and aizjanika's because they are too similar!

As for the ficathon, I've had some people drop out and I'm lookign for some backup writers. You'll get your fic, but I apologize for it being so late.

[identity profile] aurora-novarum.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. "Friend in Need" should be somewhere in the [livejournal.com profile] tealc_fic site. But I've got a copy of it here too under the "my stories" tag.

I ended up sticking all my fics on my lj. ;-)

Thanks for the rec thought! Is self pimping allowed there? If so, I'll do it tomorrow.

I totally think you should combine [livejournal.com profile] aizjanika's and my fic. They are a bit of yin and yang icons. I won't consider it cheating at all, and I hope/doubt aiz will mind.

I'm so excited you've put this all down for me. I've been reading regularly for about 8 months now, and I still am confused half the time. This will make for a good reference, this I am sure.

[identity profile] suzannemarie.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
That? Is most impressive. I was sort of known as "the listmaker" in another forum life, but I never did one as superb as this one.

In a way that TWoP thread is like coming home for me message board-wise. The very first message board that I joined (not Stargate-related) was unthreaded. Topics would be wide-ranging from the sublime to the silly. Everything out there at once (the show was always the focal point). So I love that conversations aren't segregated in their own neat little threads at TWoP. How else would we have come up with our fabulous albums, happy-talk days, and various raging alter-egos? :)

[identity profile] suzannemarie.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 01:34 am (UTC)(link)

You're doing fine. Most people I've come across here are pretty helpful in doing/explaining things. I was resistent to lj too, but after much cajoling by [livejournal.com profile] aizjanika and trying to correspond to [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde, I took the plunge. Re: dazed and confused

[identity profile] aurora-novarum.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. Okay, here's a quick way to learn how to friend. See those little head and shoulders people beside each of our names? Click on that.

That takes you directly to the poster's user info page. There's a little bar with various icons close to the top of the page.

One of those icons is another little person with a + sign.

Click on that. And then follow the prompts. (Add user to friends list? Yes. There's other options with work, family, etc, I never use. and then some kind of okay thing at the bottom.)

Then you've got a "friend"! Heh. (And probably veterans will have simpler ways to do this). Heck if there's a little person at the top of this posting where the heart and pencil and things are, you can use that. I don't see one, but I might not be able to since it's my journal.

What this means is that you don't have to search for people's individual entries all around the internet. On your page is a "friends entries". If you click on that, you see an index of the most recent lj postings by each of the people and/or communities you have listed as "friends".

If you go to my main lj page http://aurora-novarum.livejournal.com you'll see the option "Aurora's friends" as one of the menu listings. Click on that, and you can see my friends page. I belong to a couple of communities, and have some individuals as friends. I scan through and if there's an entry I'm more interested in, I may read more or comment. (For example, I usually don't look at the Atlantis fic things on my [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec or [livejournal.com profile] stargatefic because I don't read in that fandom, but they still show up on my list).

Looking at "friends" you know have similar interests to you can help you find other places you may like to go. LJ is kind of this insular internet. LOL

Helpful, or did I confuse you more?

Re: dazed and confused

Glad you enjoyed it! Did it when a lot of newbies were WTH? And a couple of the posters have said it needs to be required relinkage when newbies come on. I feel weird when I repimp, but when I don't, someone pokes me to do it. LOL

You should post on thread more often! :-D

Okay, uhm, hi! You don't know me, but I just got linked here by [livejournal.com profile] kel_of_merentha and I've gotta tell you... this is creepy.

What am I talking about? The brain. Or brane, as we (that is [livejournal.com profile] alaskhah, [livejournal.com profile] angeliequesg, [livejournal.com profile] emily_reich, [livejournal.com profile] kel_of_merentha and me) like to call it. But it's the exact same thing! We're all kinda stunned right now :P

This is some kind of weird brain brane. And right know I dunno what else to say, 'cept.. wow *creeped out*

[identity profile] angeliquesg.livejournal.com 2006-08-19 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
*waves*

(that is [info]alaskhah, [info]angeliequesg, [info]emily_reich, [info]kel_of_merentha and me)
You forgot [livejournal.com profile] yasureubetcha :P

Anyway, yeah. :P So alike it's pretty creepy. It started out with just [livejournal.com profile] merrin_delaney, [livejournal.com profile] emily_reich and me, then it kinda spread to the people around us. IIRC another poster said something about "Do you guys share a brain or something?" and we kinda went with it from there. :P Then "brain" turned into "BRANE" because of a typo or [livejournal.com profile] merrin_delaney was just being dorky and spelled it that way(too long ago, can't remember :P), either way "the BRANE" stuck with us. :P

[identity profile] merrin-delaney.livejournal.com 2006-08-19 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
omg, I forgot the fourth musketeer *blames lack of sleep, as has been up for almost 24 hours*

Anyway, yes, that's the way it happened... about one and a half years ago. :P

PS: Our little brane group's also got an own set of cabana boys. You guys are, like, some alternate versions of us, it's weird.

[identity profile] angeliquesg.livejournal.com 2006-08-19 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Our little brane group's also got an own set of cabana boys.
there's also the elf cabana(Shep's in both, of course).

You guys are, like, some alternate versions of us, it's weird.
Yup. Do you guys have a fascination with typos(or typoes), too? :P

[identity profile] emily-reich.livejournal.com 2006-08-20 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
well, there's definitely a shared fascination with off-hand comments that just stick and become running jokes... :P

("typoe" was mine, btw, wasn't it? :p)

there's also the elf cabana(Shep's in both, of course).

don't forget the girl-crush, er... cabana...?? what do we call that anyway? :p

*soooo also creeped out, btw*

speaking of brain brane, didn't we also consider making a list of our terms and major running jokes?? :p sooooo BRANE

Ah, the diverse interests of the forum where we met has allowed for cabana boys and girls of any/all varieties to tend to various needs of members.

I don't think I want to ask about an elf cabana, hee hee.

Ah, the cabana, might have been started by one of the brain before I came aboard. It's kind of a board wide thing. One thread means you'll get serious discussion and shallow end admiration...in the same post at times.

I know at least two of the members have different "favorite" cabanas, but we are firm believers of equal opportunity of the Pretty, whoever he or she may be. ;-) [my personal favorite is showing in my icon, heh]

I'm not sure when the Brain got started, several months ago at least.

[identity profile] aurora-novarum.livejournal.com 2006-08-20 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that is how it developed with us...except for the brane thing, which is pretty cute.

It was this thing, we're talking about Stargate, and give an opinion about an episode or a character, and by the time we post, one or both of the others just posted or posted right after with the same sentiment (and we often argue who's more articulate about it or succinct--though I don't think I'm EVER the latter, LOL).

[identity profile] angeliquesg.livejournal.com 2006-08-22 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] merrin_delaney and [livejournal.com profile] emily_reich did that a lot when we were at gateworld forum. The we moving to MSN where most of the braneing happens. :P

Heh, didn't mean to stun you, though [livejournal.com profile] buttersister, [livejournal.com profile] suzannemarie and I were a bit creeped out at our own brain merging...especially since it was pointed out by others on our forum more than us. We just kind of run with it now. LOL

Is the Twilight Zone theme appropriate now?

Creeped out in a good way. I hope. (Heh, and enough that everyone knows that their reality is the only one of consequence;-)
