Daniel Jackson's Record

Okay, I actually did this a while ago, but [livejournal.com profile] sg_fignewton's recent canon/fanon discussion made me decide to note it here.

I think I know Daniel's birth place.

I know fanon has two big camps of Daniel Jackson's birthplace. Either New York (where the parents died) or Egypt...because I guess he's an Egyptologist and/or his parents were putting up an Egyptian exhibit?

Anyway, I proffer that Daniel Jackson was born in Olympia. Either in Greece or in Oregon. I wanted it to be Oregon, since that's where Grandpa Nick was committed. But, there's no such place as Olympia, Oregon, but there is Olympia, Greece. After staring at the following picture, or its equivalent from my dvd pause and zoom, I'm positive it's some round letter O/G/C/Q and R as the state (or country) of birth.

I know pictures are questionable canon. Carter's birth month shown on a screen in "Entity" is different than the May month Orlin mentions in "Ascension", and O'Neill's age differs from "Brief Candle" to the id card shown in "Fragile Balance". But Daniel's birth information is open to question (I still want to know when July is in Stargate land if Daniel is 4 "and a half" in August of 1969).

This is how I've translated the above picture:

Wow, that's awesome. I can't make any of that out at all. But then, my eyes are unreliable at the best of times.

I think it's sometime in the ninth season that someone, possibly Daniel himself, says that he has three Phds. Perhaps he finished up the third one after this episode? It does seem to fanon that at least the first two were Archaeology and Linguistics, though, not Archaeology and Anthropology. And in Emancipation, he doesn't seem to be an expert in Anthropology, just has knowledge in passing, as if he took a few courses.

Ah, well.

In S9 he does have 3 PhDs. If I am remembering correctly, it's Philology, Anthropology, and Archaeology. All fields are interrelated so it's possible. In fact, many American universities have anthropologists and archaeologists teaching in the same department. While archaeology is a distinct field, many universities categorize it as a subfield in anthropology.

Philogy also interlaps, but I know less about that as a specific field.

The show focuses on Daniel as an archaeologist and linguists the most. In area of speciality seems to be Egypt. I know an archaeologist, one of my old mentors, that focuses on writing systems and langauge in an acrchaeological context and he teaches in the anthropology department. So he's basically an anthropologist (he teches a variety of courses), he considers himself an archaeologist. I figure that Daniel considers himself as archaeologists as well, even though he could get by as an anthropologist if he really wanted to.

Heh! One of my sources on the fields of study! Thanks for the explanation!

Yeah, I could make it out a bit better on my tv than this screencap I found online, but it's still iffy.

I fanwank they just ran out of space on the government form, since all three fields of Daniel's study are represented on this chart. I doubt Daniel went back to school after his descension (he was slightly dead, er, ascended, at the time). He likely had all three before he joined the Stargate program.

According to Joe Mallozzi, he asked Michael Shanks about Daniel's field of study to ensure he got it right in the script. Before that, fanon just kind of went with logic and/or used the novelization of the Stargate movie. I've also been advised by people IN this field of study, that Archeology PhD programs are often a subdivision of Anthropology. Philology may be a related degree as well.

The definitive line was spoken by Shen Xioayi in 9.17 "The Scourge" (and since Daniel did not correct her, presumably he did it because she was correct and not out of politeness).

SHEN: And Doctor Daniel Jackson. Ph.D. in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Philology. The man who solved the riddle of the Stargate.

Heh, I knew that you guys would find the definitive answer to my rambling little musings.

It's cool that you are so knowledgable in archaeology/anthropology academics, moonshayde. I wish I was an expert on something practical. Alas, my degree is in professional writing.

And I DID know that philology was the correct term for linguistics. I just couldn't think of the word.

You will probably notice that anytime someone talks about anything related to anthropology I'll just jump in, raving. Just ignore me ;)

Practical? LOL I study ancient cultures, writing systems, and history. I missed the practical boat a loooong time ago.

But professional writing is cool :)

Granted, professional writing can be VERY practical when all you want to do all day is write and edit fanfic, and your day job pays you to use the same skills on marketing materials. (I'm very, very lucky.)

But I've always loved history, and I'm sorry I didn't have time to take more courses in it when I was in college. And, of course, arch/anthro is just cool. I love people, cultures, places, events--i love see the threads and watching how they weave and intersect.

And. Um. Yeah. I'm just a total geek.
