2007 In Review

ETA: All fic links have been edited to Dreamwidth entries.
2007 was my usual rec'cing, ficcing, and metaing. Had health issues through the spring and summer which curtailed, but did not stop, my fannishness. (Considering I wrote 13 stories!!!...perhaps "curtailed" is not a good word; "enabled" may be more apt). Did two ficathons,
sd_ficathon (Sam and Daniel goodness YAY!) and the
sg1teamficathon, which was a lot of fun to do, especially since that ficathon was one of the things that inspired me to join lj (aren't you all sorry, heh).
I've continued my work in the Stargate Wiki, helping them finish the final transcripts for Season Ten, and continued towards my goal to have every planet in the SG-1 universe have an article finished. I'm quite anal about it. Plus, with the wonderful assistance of
suzannemarie, I started doing dvd commentary recaps at the
sg1_solutions lj site. We're almost done Season Ten (I know I've got to get back to it), and then we'll go back where we left off in Season 4 and...wherever suzanne was in her masochistic Gary Jones saga.
I also got involved in helping start the
redial_the_gate which has turned into an amazing community of squee for fans of ship/slash/gen. The recaps are gen oriented, but the meta, chats and fandom works posted are for all kinds. I love seeing the different perspectives of people watching this same show. We never dreamed when this comm started it would take off like that. And considering most of my December posts have been some kind of pimpage for the comm...y'all are probably tired of me going on about it. :-)
I can't find the actual "fics written meme" to remember what questions they asked, so I'm just doing mini metas on the stories I've written in 2007. They're listed here in order of when written:
Interference I finally posted the story that's been in my head since "Threads" of Season 8 aired. It's basically set from Daniel's POV for Season 6 (with hints of S7,8, and 10) and how the diner setting was created. The story sapped my muse, and with my health issues I didn't even know the extent of at the time, I can see it's not my best work. It's not bad. Some parts really shine. But, I never fully trimmed/utilized the idea to its best potential. I still have the sequel I've always intended planned and hope to write it in the near future. It's at the top of my to do list; hopefully it will come out sharper.
Girls Night In This fic was written in a brief time, totally usurping my muse from "Between the Lines" and insisting on being told after
whisper99 and
paian started discussing the female characters at the end of "Family Ties" in paian's lj commentary on the episode. I'm really happy how this story turned out. In writing, I explored the characters and their similarities in ways I'd never even thought about before. And there needs to be more girl friendship fic out there. Except for a rougher fanwank of bad canon, I think it's one of my better stories.
Netscapade I think this is one of my favorite stories ever, just because it's light team silly adventure. I'd had it in my head ever since I saw that cool "team in peril" stick figure cartoon icon, and it really gelled as I tried to kick my muse back into form after my hospitalization. It really picked me up, and I hope it did others too.
Twenty Things That Are My Canon Okay, this was more a meme and not a fic, but it's about the closest I'll come to writing those "five thing" ficlets, and was a fun group of character/team studies.
Runcible Spoon. My story for the
sd_ficathon written for
sg_fignewton, I went through a few different ideas before I finally settled on this one. For some reason "The Owl and the Pussycat" poem got stuck in my head and I pictured Sam and Daniel in a pea green boat (runcible spoon is a line from the poem
fabrisse came up with, because I wasn't that clever–I did add a "spoon" tie in however). The final inspiration was during one of my illness-induced insomnia bits, I watched a history special where they talked about the boats found at Abydos, Egypt. I took that as a sign. For some reason, I trend towards cute endings in team fics, but I likes my teamy goodness. I'm happy with the overall story, but I still think fig handled this prompt better with the story she ended up writing for this ficathon. :-)
I Feel Pretty My first collaboration! LOL. Okay, it's really cracky chatfic
abyssinia and I came up with when we were bored one evening. She came up with the cool Teal'c zingers. I came up with Cam's drawl and Kinsey/Deliverance references. It's just silly and fun, and surprisingly coherent for chat crackfic.
Between the Lines. This fic started off as one idea that went a whole new direction with Woolsey. Then I had my surgeries, and backburnered the story, but it wouldn't leave me alone. The fic felt like it had to be exorcised from me. The parts that really sang were where I just wrote to try and rev my muse into "thinking about the story"–like Woolsey and Bra'tac. I planned on getting rid of them, but my betas vetoed me. And those parts have gotten the most response. It never did come out quite like I had it in mydrug addled head, but it came fairly close. The plot tension was an awkward balance to strike. It was also the first time I really tried to write Jack's POV. I find him the hardest character to get right, because RDA plays him with surprising subtlety. I was happy with how his voice came out.
Trauma Confusion written as a lark from a discussion on
sg_fignewton's journal about how often SG teams must get stuck with needles for their mission checkups and my own recent personal experiences, it ended up being a birthday fic for fig as well and was a lot of fun creating a new "outsider" character to view SG-1. I really do like playing with outsider (or at least, non-main character) POVs. I write Daniel best when someone else is seeing him more than in his own mind. I was surprised at how much feedback I received from the story, but it was a lot of fun to play. I only came up with the character's first name when I had to expand on her for that "character writing meme" later.
Getting to Know...Me I wrote this on a whim because I was feeling Jacob needed more loving and as a little birthday gift to
selmak. It's a bit bittersweet and perhaps reflects my own contemplative mood at the time as much as evaluates Jacob and Selmak's characters, but was an interesting inner-dialogue fic (I had sworn off that style after "Many Roads" too).
Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow To tell the truth, I forgot about this story until I ran across it again. It was just a random muse striking me when I was overcome by missing SG-1 when "Reunion" of SGA aired. So I wrote this SG-1 teamy goodness story including everyone, because even though Sam's on SGA now, she's still part of the team, dammit! It's just a sweet aw moment with everyone. Even though it's set in SGA's timeline, I count it as an SG-1 fic.
Character Studies was a meme about characters in stories I've already written. In some cases, I just did some meta, but in other cases, I ended up writing missing scenes and/or tags to some of my existing stories. It was a lot of fun to do.
My sappy trend continued with There's No Place Like Home Season One downtime teamy story with Janet & Cassie. It's a sappy piece, but a bit of teamy goodness sap every now and then isn't a bad thing, right? Was written as a thank you to some anonymous benefactor who got me a paid lj account!
The Archway Written for the
sg1teamficathon, this story was a lot of fun to do in concept because I'd never done the "team stranded" cliche before. Only afterwards did I realize it was a kink of my recipient's that I probably didn't do correctly at all, but I did have fun playing with an interweaving of canon and fanon large cliches and obscure references...and figuring out how to have an "original team stranded together" set in Season 8. Sometimes the characters were quite uncooperative in what I wanted them to do. And of course, they were often right.
Holding the Bags My final 2007 fic is an answer to a complaint I often make about the dearth of Jack and Sam friendship fic. I figured I'm not allowed to complain anymore until I write one myself. It ended up having a teamy bent as well, but it was fun to play with this particular duo's interactions–and it's just light fun.
