So, [livejournal.com profile] beanpot's love meme had me looking at my profile, and I've noticed more people on it. I don't pay close attention, so you usually have to whack me on the head to say "I'm here" whereupon I will likely spam your journal. So, hi, new people, and old friends. *waves*

I figured I'd explain a bit about me so y'all know what you're getting into. I think I can count on one hand the number of f-lock entries I make, so pretty much what you see publicly is what you get.

The Real Me
I'm a single, well educated, *cough* year old female living on the East Coast of the USA, but have family ties and interests in Canada as well. That's pretty much all I say about real life. Sure I have opinions on politics and religion and social issues and world events, but fandom's my escape hatch, and I tend to stay out of such discussions on lj. I'll talk about other tv shows/movies/books, but I'm fairly monogomist on my fandom–namely SG-1. If you're hanging out on my lj, I'll presume we share that in common to some extent or another.

My name:
"Aurora Novarum" is a name I made up when I was 10-12 and invented superheroes [as portrayed by my Barbie dolls]. It seemed fitting when I tried to come up with a penname when jumping into the world of fanfic. I have a couple other "fannish" names, most notably "totalTVaddict" (which is my yahoo email), because when I first entered fandom, it was through the TwoP (television without pity) and I thought I'd be hanging out in more places than just the SG-1 thread. I joined and started wandering fandom a couple weeks before Season 8's "Citizen Joe" aired on SciFi, so the inside jokes of that episode were very "fresh" to me. However, I've been a (casual) fan of SG-1 since probably 1999 when Season One/Season Two was airing in syndication.

My fandom tendencies:
I'm pretty much a gen girl through and through. [livejournal.com profile] annerbhp has told me more than once that "Teamy Goodness is my OTP", and I think she's right. My personal philosophy is whatever floats your boat/ship/flotation device. I've been lucky to meet and make friends with people in all areas of fandom, shippers/slashers/femmeslashers/multishippers, and of course other gen-fen like me. While I prefer not to see canon inter-team ship on the show, in fanon, I can be caught reading anything (but gen–team/duo/trio friendship stuff is my go-to spot for fandom kicks.) I love hearing other perspectives–and discussing them. I don't like harshing others squee. But I do hope for the same respect (even if they think my gen glasses are a deluded prescription). I figure we all agree on so much more than we disagree...like Goa'ulds, and the Ancients and...hair.

I love the team dynamic of all of SG-1 (and in team, I include Janet, and George and Jacob and Bra'tac too). I love what I call "classic team" with the original Fab Four. I love NewGuy team with shiny Mitchell. I love Season Ten team when they've all gelled again with ex-pirate Vala too. And I even have a fondness for Jonas era team, although during Season Six I almost stopped watching the series* because I missed the "cute archeologist guy" that was on. Yes, I discovered I was a Daniel-girl at heart almost too late. Oh, and I'm a big fan of Bill Lee, brought on after I used him a one of my earliest stories.

*(that's a story in and of itself)

Although Daniel is my favorite, Sam is not far behind because I love a chick that kicks ass and is smart and has a messed up personal life. I discovered in some areas of fandom being a fan of Sam AND Daniel is some kind of oxymoronic pariah. But have found a home with like minded, (or at least tolerant of my foibles) folks. Like with ships, I respect people's criticisms and joyous ravings about particular events or characterizations in episodes, and happily discuss them, but I don't tolerate character bashing for bashing sake or closed minded opinions ("my way is the right/only way.") My natural tendency is to try and think the best of people...and that goes for characters...heck, I even tried to find something redeeming about Kinsey once. That was...hard.

My fandom activities:
As mentioned, I love to read and write gen fic–exploring friendships, character studies, figuring out something that quirks my interest in an episode. The first post to my lj is my list of fiction, which I also archive at Stargatefan and Alphagate if/when I remember. Lately I've been writing more "lighter" team stuff, but my mood ranges. [livejournal.com profile] beanpot has designated me Queen of Gen Fic. I don't know if I should resist such titles as contrary to my democratic nature, if I'm supposed to fight similarly proclaimed Dictratrix of Gen [livejournal.com profile] sg_fignewton as a rival, or if fig and I need to join forces to spread the teamy goodness love everywhere. (Personally, I'm leaning towards option three.)

I've also been given another title I'm quite proud of by [livejournal.com profile] zats_clear... "Betababe, the fastest beta in the west." I always want to primp my hair at that title. Heh. I got the title because I hope I'm a decent beta-er (at least other people seem to think so), can wield commas, and I, well...I can read *really* fast naturally. If time permits, I'm usually a good call for someone needing someone to sneak peek a beta, and yes it's been known to happen for ship and slashy stories too. ;-)

I have a kneejerk tendency to want to answer random trivia questions, so if you ask something SG related on lj, expect me to pounce. I'll try not to spam too much. I've found an outlet for those tendencies at the Stargate Wiki where I started helping out with transcripts in Season Nine and still contribute and edit articles. I will also unapologetically pimp the Wiki as a resource, because it's big and cool with lots of stuff. (Hey, I was crazy enough to volunteer to write three English to alien dictionaries for them. I've got a vested interest. Heh.)

Last but not least, I'm one of the co-founders of [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate here on lj, which if you don't know about it yet, it's a comm where we're rewatching all of SG-1--one episode a week. There's international chats where we all watch an ep together, snarky recaps, fanworks, and meta discussions. It's been more successful than our wildest dreams.

And that's it. More than you ever wanted to know about me. Everyone's welcome to play in my little SG-1 sandbox, but no mud in the eye!

Be glad you've not witnessed it. It's not pretty. To be fair, I haven't seen it much on lj, and the issue has faded...whether that's because LJ is more compartmentalized by nature or tempers have cooled over time, I'm not sure. Possibly the latter, because like I said, my flist spans the fandom spectrum (although, usually the saner members).

When I was first in fandom a few years ago, vestiges of hot tempers still overflowed and I went to scarier places--like the unmoderated comments on Joe Mallozzi's blog when he used to be on Gateworld (or GW's forums for that matter.)

Me too. I always figure that anyone who likes animals must be redeemable, in some way.

Exactly! By the way, you did know "Oscar" was actually RDA's dog, right?

I'm glad you brought up the Wiki, because I haven't really had a look and now think that I better do so!

Hee! Yes! Go forth and explore! I like the SG Teams by Episode and Planets by Episode especially (the latter of which is kind of my pet project. Someday I hope to finish more detailed articles on them all).

I pulled myself away from Gateworld when I found myself jumping into the middle of an argument, and saying something that I knew would be a red flag to a bull, just to pull attention to myself and away from a more sensitive soul who was about to be pummelled. While it did give me a greater appreciation of why Jack taunts the bad guys, I thought that I shouldn't have to treat fellow posters like the Goa'uld. ; ) Not to mention that I sometimes found myself rising to the bait then thinking 'What the hell?' Now I rarely go there.

I did not know that! Thanks for letting me know - that will give me something new to look for when watching the episode.

I didn't even go into the scarier parts of the boards, but yeah, I understand. But at least you recognized you were Goa'uld baiting. I pulled a Daniel on JoeM's blog and tried to make peace with the factions as someone with a foot in both "camps". Talk about naive. Hee! (Actually I did get the parties to cool down in one instance, but I soon learned it was a losing battle overall.)

GW spoiled me too much with headlines on their front page, and when I was on dialup, their graphics killed my computer. Now, I'll only wander there when someone links me to an article.

Re: Oscar I've always wondered if it's the same dog in 200 as well in the "Invisible O'Neill segment". I can't quite tell, but it looks like it.

I was so hoping that they would say in one of the 200 commentaries. I think it looks an awful lot like the same dog. (But then on the other hand, if RDA was only there for a couple of days of filming, I wonder if he'd really bring the doggie along.)

And I've never understood/liked the fandom thing where if you like one particular character/actor/show, you automatically have to dislike some perceived rival character/actor/show. It's one of the things that drives me craziest about fandoms in general.

Very true, that is a strange animal of fandom, and not limited to SG-1.

With the SG-1 shipper wars, TWoP skewed my experience. Because each "side" agrees the other is delusional, then they make up various boats on the River of D'Nial. Once I understood wtf was up with all these maritime vessels, I liked the spirit of the thing.

It's so much more fun to lob screencaps and then get together for tasty beverages than get into nasty battles.

I know. I go back and forth myself. I think I even broke down and asked JoeM on his current blog once, but he didn't remember. Sigh.
