Title: Red Shirt Airman
Category: Missing Scene from "the Scourge"; Character Study; Gen; Action
Warnings: Language; icky bugs; Season 9 Scourge spoilers
Rating: PG-13 ish
Word Count: ~480
Summary: Airman Walker's thoughts while on guard duty at the caves.
Author's Notes: Done for a challenge a few years ago. Was my first really short story and first attempt at stream of consciousness. The original story was always hidden because I thought it was utter dreck.
zats_clear read it and convinced me to let it see the light of day, so here's a slightly polished version. Thanks to zats for betaing (Any and all blame still goes to me ;-).
It's going to be okay. It's going to be okay. I just have to keep telling myself that. It's going to be okay. It's the mantra I've been repeating to myself ever since we herded everyone towards these caves. After...What was that? Better move ahead a bit and check it out. Maybe I should fire my weapon like SG-1 earlier, scaring the bugs away. Just a few shots. No, maybe save my ammo. Nothing here I can see.
I keep seeing Roger screaming as that swarm encompassed his whole body before fading away to nothing...don’t think about that. It's going to be okay.
Hey, at least I came up with the idea of the caves. That was good, right? Colonel Carter even complimented me on it. Didn't know she was so pretty. Colonel Mitchell was really nice too when he came out to check on my sentry half an hour ago. Asked me how I was. Didn't expect a Medal of Honor hero to be such a regular guy. I could see he was worried when he tried to contact Pearson. No word from the Gamma Site. That's not good. Colonel Pearson was a great C.O...can't think about that now. Focus. Pearson gave you orders to stay with SG-1 and the delegation. Have to show those IOA suits that Airman Brad Walker follows orders, and is not ready to piss his pants because we're all about to die from some freaking alien bugs.
No, we won't die. I'm with SG-1, the heroes of the Stargate. They'll think of something. They've defeated the Replicators, the Goa'uld...little bugs have gotta be nothing to them. Just need to do my job. It's going to be okay.
Man, this itch won't go away. Can't seem to scratch the right spot. It keeps shifting--my neck, my shoulder. Chill out, Walker. It's just nerves. I'm by the rocks. I'm safe. Just keep on guard. Maybe I should lean against the rocks...
Bugs. Bugs. I can feel them all around me. Can't think. Can't...I should warn the others. It's almost time for Doctor Jackson to relieve me. Maybe I can wait. If I yell, it might alert the bugs. Colonel Carter said something about echo location. Don't want them to swarm, but... The pain, can't think...
No. Have to move. They're here. They're everywhere. They're...
Oh God, they're in me!
Just like Doctor Myers. With all the... No! Can't be true. I'm by the rocks. So itchy. I can't reach to scratch. All over. Can't...
I hear them. The bugs. They're here. What can I do...?
Have to go. Have to lead them away from the delegation. Follow the mission. Protect....
Have to get out!
Have to escape!
No, have to do my duty.
Can't make a sound! The bugs'll hear.
Have to go! Have to...
Run...
Fin.
