2009. My rebellious year. But it's still been a busy year fandomwise. I organized my first ficathon ever! And it turned out better than I ever dreamed. jacksamfriends was a quirky setup, but lots of fun (at least I had fun, and I gathered others did too), with LOTS of great fic as a result.

There was a big dry spell in the middle of the year, but I did do some dvd commentaries on fic. I even made icons! Go me!

Still busy with redial_the_gate. I can't believe we're in Season Six. I remember when were thinking, omg, we're going to do ten seasons? This will take years! And we're well over half-way there.

I've been a bad wiki editor for Solutions Stargate wiki. At least I've still been doing transcripts. Some of Atlantis, all of Universe to date. I still have to get back to doing the dvd commentary recaps for the comm site and stuff. Just getting a bit burned out sometimes. (As always, if anyone wants to volunteer to write up something for ANY of the Stargates, in the wiki, poke me!)

The Fic:

What Would Jack Do? A series of Ficlets. So in a way it's ten separate stories right from the get go, but they're all in a theme. I think sometimes my muse hates me. For proof: see This muse/character/author writing ventilation too

Countdown An honest to god comment length fic. Definitely a different style than usual for me. Very stark–more a mood piece.

Crossfire Annerb put up an icon challenge, and my contrary/awnry nature couldn't resist putting a gen twist on a plot concept of Jack and Sam going to a storage closet. I still love the image of Teal'c as a purple smurf.

The Long Night Oooh, my jacksamfriends fic. Of course it was the longest of the entries to the ficathon. The rules said we could choose "one" of the grabbag o'prompts, but I mentioned I'm contrary right? I didn't even follow my own ficathon's rules (though I didn't break any). I took all three prompts and weaved it into this suspenseful story. The only way to make sure I didn't "overteam" the duo friendship was to kick Daniel and Teal'c out of the story from the getgo...but Jack and Sam angst made them still be a part of things.

Path of Good Intentions Written for teal'c ficathon off princessofgeeks prompts.

Alien Babes Get Around. A "ship" fic, but it's crack. And yes, I blame annerb for this one too.

Wargames Didn't Play Out Like This I crossed a Rubicon now. My first ever crossover fic (well, okay, technically Pie Day and Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow were crossovers, but come on, SGA is the same UNIVERSE, and Parting is an SG-1 fic that just takes place in SGA timeline). But when there was a line about Area 52 at the end of a Leverage ep, I could not resist. Was planning to be crack. But I rarely can break out of canon enough to go full crack. I think it ended up not too bad for a crossover.

Sleep Guardian I've threatened to write this fic for years. It turned out to be a sweet character study though (even if I was a sneaky goof).

Unexpected Visitor. This was inspired as one of the five things for a five things prompt, but it's really it's own unique story.

Haunted Ship Yes, do you see it?! It's done, it's done! Whoo hoo! It turned out mostly how I had it pictured in my head too, but it was a lot of struggle to get there. When are they inventing that concept of brainstorm to fully realized fic on screen without all this silly "writing" step?

Staying on a Jaffa's Good Side

Little Fixes (written with [personal profile] zats_clear. My second ever collaboration, when zats convinced me not to abandon my Infirmary Notes sequelesque plot bunny for [profile] one_prompt and ended up writing half the scenes in chat.

DuckCat I ended the year as I began, with icon fics. (I still want to do ones for the rest of the prompters too!) This...is pretty cracky.

Five Things:
I could never get inspired by five things. My muse doesn't tend to think in vignette lines. Of course, what is it that pulls me to five things? Bill Lee.

They had two questions related to Evolution, so I ended up writing some bookends/"missing scenes" that correlate to my personal canon of "Just a Scientist".
Five Things Bill Lee Learned about Daniel Jackson.

Old Friends Remet a/k/a Five Things Burke learned about Jack O'Neill

Five People with Crushes on Daniel.

Five things Hammond hid in the desk drawers in his office

Five Times Thor Beamed Up Jack at an Inappropriate Time

Five Classes McKay will never admit to taking in college

Five Things Lam learned about Janet Fraiser after becoming base CMO (I made up this prompt).

As for the questions...

Review of my Goals for 2009. Did I meet that goal?Last year, I started to feel in a writing rut so I made this a year of writing for me–or at least writing those fics I've had ideas about for so long. I still ended up working in three ficathons and doing icon/five things prompts, and dropped out of stargate_summer, but I really did some different things, polishing parts of my writing that work and playing with some new ideas too. Not sure how well that succeeded, but it sure made the writing process less smooth. No more rut!

I also even did some smaller things. I did sg1_five_things! A few of them! Okay so one turned into a separate story anyway, but most fit into just two comments, so...yay!

My Favorite Stories of the Year: "Wargames Didn't Play Out Like This" was just fun. "What Would Jack Do?" for the scope and diverse tone, and Crossfire just for silly fun. Oh and "Sleep Guardian" I've threatened to twist that fanon trope for years and finally did it. Heh.

My Best Stories This Year: "Haunted Ship"...I tried to make it one of my best, and right now I'm feeling I succeeded with what I wanted. (Ask me next month and maybe I'll have a different answer again, heh). "WWJD" turned out very good, and "Countdown" did well as a mood piece.

Stories most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I've been very lucky in feedback response this year. Maybe Countdown? But that got a lot of love. So...yeah.

Stories I Wrote That I Never Thought I'd Write: DuckCat. It's an icon of a cat head with duck feet. Come on! Wargames. (A crossover?! Really?) I also didn't expect to write so much with Siler and Cassie, but they seem to be cropping up in my fics a lot lately. For Siler, maybe I should blame the icon I grabbed from [personal profile] paian. Also, just any five things. I mentioned the ship fic, right?

Most Fun Stories: What Would Jack Do–especially the Jack tale and Teal'c tale and Whipped Dream. They were awfully fun. Crossfire, Jaffa's Good Side, and Alien Babes for just the mental picture. And "Sleep Guardian" for me just being evil.

Sexiest Stories: I still argue this questionnaire has an anti-gen bias. ;-) DuckCat! Just kidding. I'd say "Path of Good Intentions" because of the sensuality between Ba'al and...well Qetesh, but also anyone/everyone. Also Alien Babes Get Around...although it's sexy crack!

Hardest Stories to Write: Last year, I said "Haunted Ship" even though I hadn't finished it. I still say it, but now it's completed! Woo hoo! Anyone (meaning everyone I talk to in chat) and my betas who read three rewrites of the thing (plus the other two no one saw) know how much of a struggle this was to get the fic in my head to match the one on the screen. "What Would Jack Do?" was also a struggle because of the very diverse tones and styles I was playing with along the same overall theme (especially Sam's and Daniel's sections).

Easiest Stories to Write: "Crossfire" came very easily. "Sleep Guardian" turned out much different than I expected, but also came through very smoothly (gah, I love writing Teal'c). I had a no ficathon vow, but tealc_ficathon was my first ever attempt at one, so when it was reprised, I had to sign up. To tell the truth, I was going to do [personal profile] princessofgeeks's other Forever in a Day prompt, but nothing was gelling right for me. So in desperation, I looked at the Continuum idea and suddenly scenes pictured in my mind. I felt the rush of the deadline finishing it up though.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? I...wrote more than I thought I had, but they're different fics than I planned to. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with it. 12 fics, 21 if you parse out WWJD to the ten ficlets, plus 7 "five things".

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? Yes, I played more with different styles. The stark mood of Countdown. The loose theme of WWJD. The half-original story/characters with Haunted Ship (plus it has romance in it!). Plus the vignette ideas of five things–it's hard for me to just do a scene with no beginning or end. Even the Teal'c Continuum story, while more along my missing scenes/outsider pov style, was stretching some muscles because of the combination of canon and AU timeline backstories and world building I had to do. Oh, I also wrote crack pron, but that's not archived anywhere (I blame annerb). I learned more about backstory and what to include and what develop and also how sentence structure can set a tone as much as description.

Biggest Disappointment Path of Good Intentions. I wish I had a little more time to polish the fic. Some is just some basic grammar, but some of the interactions could've done with a bit more polish–especially that one scene with Bra'tac. Maybe I would've even written the planned Ba'al and Teal'c scene at the time travel planet. Also, I'm disappointed I didn't write more of what I planned.

Biggest Surprise Well the biggest big surprise was that I won in the Stargate Fan Awards...twice! I've always said it's an honor just to be nominated, because it really is to have someone actively choose to have your fic amongst "best in fandom." And this year, at least in the gen categories where I was nommed, there was some very stiff competition, so I was very surprised and humbled by that. I honestly expected "Haunted Ship" to go on the "unappreciated" list easily. Original character narration. On "Odyssey". Dealing with "Unending". Heck SG-1 while "present", aren't even really there most of the fic, but the great response has been a welcome surprise.

Do you have any goals for the New Year? To get more of my WIPs done and to write more oritinal fic. Maybe I'll even get that idea I had for last year's stargate_summer finally written–considering that was my first ever SG-1 plot bunny before I even knew other people wrote fanfic and it wasn't just some demented idea in my head.

2007 Year in Fic
Apparently I didn't do one or can't find it for 2005/2006 when I started here.
