I've been doing lots of reading. Some teamy goodness which I'll hopefully be rec'cing at [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec next month, and some more "out of the box" recs from me. A few ship, a few slash, a few with SGA characters... So here they are, a nonexclusive list of "must reads" (with more to follow not listed at the ficrec...and probably even more I'm forgetting):

Oh, first, not exactly a fic, but must see/read:

Vid [livejournal.com profile] nibikko has put up a new fanvid...an opening credit/teaser sequence for Teal'c P.I. It's hilarious. (And if you haven't watched Hard Knock Life and/or Vogue. You must!)

Parody Scripts by [livejournal.com profile] kalquessa My new fandom toy (as evidenced by me completely spamming her lj) are these "mockscripts" of random SG-1 episodes. [livejournal.com profile] kaquessa is a newbie to SG-1. If you're at all familiar with [livejournal.com profile] nialla42's breadboxes, you should enjoy these. Plus kalquessa loves all the team members, so there's teamy love amongst the members behind the parody.

Now the fic:

Striptease by [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates Gen. Okay, I found this via the [livejournal.com profile] sg1_debrief, and I will be rec'cing it again in stargateficrec even though someone else already did too. And I can't resist rec'cing it here. It is awesome Season Nine team with a strange team in peril rite of passage for Mitchell. It sounds like crackfic, it was intended as crackfic, but it turned out to be so much more. Funny, teamy, with a dash of angst. Even non-fans of Mitchell could enjoy his fish-out-of-water sensation and his insights into his teammates as they are "forced" to view his more physical attributes.

Bad Dreams by [livejournal.com profile] elgrey. Gen. A lovely episode tag of Sam and Teal'c friendship (and a backdrop of Teal'c and Daniel friendship). Teal'c is still recovering from the events of Changeling, with lingering uncertainty of what is reality. The way both of Teal'c's dreams and "reality" are interwoven, with his connections to his life, and his friends makes a beautiful story. She's also recently rereleased an old J&D friendship with AU J/D fic that explores the J & D dynamic. Some of the real, some of the fanon, and some subversions of both. Very interesting character study of Jack and Daniel as individuals, their interrelationships, and the perceptions thereof.

Shadow Over Chatsworth by [livejournal.com profile] saffronhouse Gen. found via [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec, this story haunted me literally for days! It's Daniel Jackson and Rodney McKay stranded on a back country road in the good ol' U.S. of A. while trying to meet Zalenka about some research. The characterizations of both are fantastic. There's mystery, intrigue, some whumping, and lots of awesome banter.

The Joy That You Find Here You've Borrowed by [livejournal.com profile] paian J/D slash; Teal'c/Vala & Cam/Sam and combinations thereof (hey it's apocafic. All bets are off). The end of the galaxy and Jack's left in charge of a small fleet of Earth ships...survivors of the human race. There are two equally fascinating storylines going on. The macrocosm of trying to start over when everything is gone, and the microcosm of wondering what could be/might be/should be in his personal life. The former is handled lovingly with epic scope. The latter, with a level of understatement and respect for both of these strong-willed men. No less involved is the "why and how" the apocalypse happens, which weaves both storylines to a heartbreaking climax. Yes, sad, but *so* worth it. Really.

Beneath the Stains of Time by [livejournal.com profile] annerbhp Jack/Sam, hints of Daniel/Vala, Jack and Vala friendship. (I know, I know, another apocafic. Maybe the end of the world makes ships more palatable for me, I dunno.) I am totally biased on this one because I helped beta it, but it had levels of awesomeness before I even glanced through it. Time travel and mystery and trying to save humanity as only Jack O'Neill can do. What's not to love? One of the best sequences is between Jack and Sam (yeah, she goes with Sam instead of Carter. Roll with it, it works here) where Jack's almost accepting defeat and Sam's not yet begun to fight. It's fascinating to follow the characters, some with other timeline knowledge, others without, and yet see all lovingly characterized by annerb.

Decade by [livejournal.com profile] nomadicwriter Jack/Sara. Any fan of Jack O'Neill MUST read this story. It's on fanfiction.net, not lj, but really, it's worth the read anyway. :-) It's a wonderful character study by the woman who many years ago, knew him best. Season Nine/Ten spoilers–but mainly about Jack's station. Nomad's done a wonderful insight on Sara, Jack, and the trauma that both binds them and tears them apart. There are lots of small details that are played with that you as reader will go, oh yeah...that works as canon!

So, I know I have lots of cool slashers, shippers, multipack people, and of course other beloved genners. And I'm asking all of YOU. What fic would you recommend for a "usually sees them all as just friends" reader for ship and slash of SG-1? (frienship/gen fic recs always encouraged) Is there a cool SGA friendship fic you think would be perfect?

I have only a few caveats. For SG-1: No PWPs/lots of pron...I'm most likely going to skim those sections anyway. Nothing too shmoopy (that's how I started in some pairing genres...and why I don't often return). And no pairings with Cassie...I'm still traumatized from one.

As for SGA, I'd better take baby steps and stick with gen on this one. So far I've only been able to enjoy crossovers with SG-1 characters, so those would work...and to pull me out of my SG-1 box, my favorite SGA characters are Carson Beckett and Teyla Emmagan.

So...fic to read? Please? (And self pimps welcomed/encouraged)

Living in the Moment, or Sexual Perversity in Denial by Fran Hartman (http://greensilver.livejournal.com/320165.html?view=1952677)
I adore this story. I admit a love for stranded fics, especially if it is just Jack and Daniel. This one has sex, but has me laughing my a$$ off every time I read it. So I think I will read it again LOL

To Drink From the Waters of Lethe by isabeau (http://isabeau.livejournal.com/617352.html), which pretty much sums up all the angst I can feel for the J/D pairing. I still choke up reading that story. No sex, just sadness and loss. Bring tissues. Then read the Gateverse remix of it (isabeau lists it)

Understood by Keiko Kirin (http://pteropus.com/keiko/sg/understood.html) Jack gets tooled by being able to read other peoples minds. Makes you wonder what other people are really thinking of you. How disturbing!

have I touched on anything you haven't read? try my delicious (http:/del.icio.us/place4mystuff) for a getting there in terms of organization recs list.

Hey, thanks for the pimp!

And yay, recs! I've been digging for new gen fic recently, this will help! And Shadow Over Chatsworth filled my little Lovecraft-luvin' heart with joy. I just wish it had taken place in Louisiana, to really push it all the way into Lovecraft territory. An old Southern Royalty goa'uld is just one of those things that needed to happen. Plus, Rodney's always good fun.

Oh, and as for recs:

I've been reading a bit of Atlantis stuff, myself, recently. I'm a gen girl, so that's pretty much all I have to offer. I'm told the Retrograde AU series is required reading for Atlantis fandom, and I can see why. It's brilliant and contains stellar characterization of both the Atlantis cast and SG-1. So good even people who could care less about Atlantis read it anyway, so you may have already seen it, but just in case: start here (http://www.ltljverse.com/watergate/stories/retrograde1.htm). There's snark! Lots and lots of snark!

Oh, and as for more gen recs, I can so hook you up (or someone else on my flist can). LOL. Just give me your preferences for characters/style genres.

I had to reopen Shadow to find the link to post here, and it's still open in a window on my computer to REREAD AGAIN when I have a chance. :-) (And yes, after exploring her site more, I realize I have read some of her other slash fic, and yes, it too is awesomeness).

Oh, I'm pretty content with just about anything well-written that doesn't contain more shippiness than your average episode. I especially love teamy goodness, humor and action (explosions for the yay!). The drama, angst and hurt/comfort, I'm not such a fan of but I find that I'll happily read any and all of those things if it's a good writer. I like character-centric pieces, too, but I find that those have a higher likelihood of getting very bogged down in the head-shrinking and the analyzing everyone's feelings and motivations and relationships with one another and hey, nothing's blown up in a while, I think I'll go get something eat. Yeah. So anything with good dialog and not much psycho-analysis is good.

Hee, so you're saying you're a follower of the Peter DeLuise school of blowing shit up. Gotcha. Well, I could be lazy and tell you to wander through my "stargate recs" tag, but here's some good highlights.

Chance (http://community.livejournal.com/sg1teamficathon/7265.html) by Mitai. It's definitely a teamy adventure where everyone plays a great part (okay, Daniel spends most of his time pretty whumped, poor fella, but the Sam love is awesome) Actually you should give any and all of the fics at the [livejournal.com profile] sg1teamficathon a go through. They're starting it up again. If you haven't signed up for it, at least you'll be able to enjoy the fic that comes out of it. In the meantime, enjoy the awesomeness of the first one.

Travelling One (http://homepage.mac.com/traveller1/travelling-one/) focuses on team or Jack and Daniel friendship. Her stories are usually adventure with a twist. She likes to play with more unusual aliens or morally ambiguous tales (I say it's Twilight Zone like in that respect). She's my favorite SG-1 gen author overall.

Double Trouble (http://moonshayde.livejournal.com/237143.html) by [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde I'm totally unbiased here, because this fic was partly inspired by my icon (pictured above). Moonshayde's gen fics are very plotty character driven adventures. When you really want to go deep and have a lot of time, give her "A Priori" a try (written before Season Ten and without knowledge of spoilers, it's eerily prescient in some ways to things that happened).

These are just ones I'm thinking of off the top of my head that are "adventurey". I know I'm missing others.

"usually sees them all as just friends" reader

Hee! That's me, right there. I don't read much shippy Stargate fic, and the only ones I could really recommend are either John Sheppard/Mitchell or Sheppard/Vala, so. No help there!

However! Since self-pimping is allowed, I recently wrote an SGA fic which is partly about the team getting attacked by cannibals but mostly about how Teyla is awesome. It's bite-sized in length, and is here (http://mahoni.livejournal.com/246435.html) if you're interested.

By other authors:

One of my all-time favorite stories in which Teyla features is Abrazzo (http://glitterati.illuminatedtext.com/fiction/abrazo.html); yes, it's essentially about John and Teyla dancing, but it's not so much shippy as it is just plain beautiful.

I'm a big fan of [livejournal.com profile] ltlj's stories; I can think of one non-shippy Teyla-POV story of hers right away that I really like, here (http://www.ltljverse.com/watergate/stories/strangers.htm). She's also written a long, plotty AU SGA/SG1 crossover that I really love, the first part of which is called Retrograde (http://www.ltljverse.com/watergate/stories/retrograde1.htm). The summary is: 'The Atlantis expedition has been lost for three years. SG-1 goes to find them, and arrives just a little too late.'

I totally do, I just worry that I'm forgetting something incredibly obvious and I'm going to thwap myself in the head the minute I post, or it's so obvious that of course you've already read it, or or or. But going with the first that popped into my mind:

Home from Here by [livejournal.com profile] merryish is totally un-shmoopy but totally lovely and not-porny Jack/Daniel that's as much a portrait of Jack on Retirement Day as it is an incipient-ship fic. And it's a really happy fic. :-)

[livejournal.com profile] synecdochic's Calibrate does visibly head in the direction of a Jack/Daniel slash pairing but is also imo a wonderfully warm and happy friendship fic ... kind of like, the way some fics are labeled 'gen but there's slash if you look at it sideways' or however they phrase it? This is pre-slash, and it describes a delicious massage in lovely detail, but the physical contact doesn't have to be read with sexual overtones and the fic doesn't have to be read as slash. And I just love it.

It's hard to pick one thing by [livejournal.com profile] troyswann, so ... ha, I won't! Close I can't even describe, it's a very quiet, very beautiful vignette ... and Context is a brilliant and fascinating (and, warning, also heartbreaking) fic that's about what happens when we meet the Furlings and in which a Jack/Daniel established relationship is important, but not the focus in a traditionally shippy/slashy way.

That's a start, anyway, and I hope some of them will turn out to be sort of what you were looking for, if I haven't misunderstood. ::worries more:: I'll keep thinking about it!

Thank you for the kind words about my reading logs, wow ... and big thanks for being spoiler-conscious about 'Borrowed'! It's a fantastic description and I love it. And I love 'Decade'! I had a Jack/Sara prompt all ready for when I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] sg_rarepairings, and then I didn't sign up after all, but in 'Decade' I got to read the fic I would have asked for if I'd known to ask for it, if that makes any sense, and that's just delightfully cool. :-) :-)

As for SGA, I'd better take baby steps and stick with gen on this one. So far I've only been able to enjoy crossovers with SG-1 characters, so those would work...

Since you liked my latest story, I should take a moment to pimp my SG-1/SGA crossover, The Pegasus Connection (although be warned that it is A, also on fanfiction.net and B, a whacking great 100,000 words split into 28 chapters). It's more SG-1 than SGA focused, and features the season 8/season 1 casts, Baal, Jack's clone, and just about every other character I could plausibly cram in there.

I have some SGA gen stories listed at my recs journal, although they're mostly Rodney or Zelenka centric (and given the fandom's leanings, tend to have a heavy dose of Sheppard as well). Crossover-wise, I second the rec for Retrograde, and I also recommend Care Packages by Auburn & eretria (SG-1 send care packages to the Atlantis team) and Cosecant by Domenika Marzione (Jack debriefs Sheppard after the events of The Siege).

This is why I don't post fic on LJ. (Aside from the fact that reading fic on LJ is pretty annoying for me because it's hard to load multiple pages on dial-up.) My brain defaults to "thirty chapter epic". Most people like to dip a toe in when they start writing for a new fandom, but me, I do cannonballs into the deep end. I'd just watched eight seasons of SG-1 and one of Atlantis back to back, and I wanted to write about everybody.

Yeah, Care Packages is the one with the lemons. I haven't really read much SGA lately unless it's come from someone else's recs, sadly. With SG-1 I'm invested enough to have kept up with spoilers for season ten, but with SGA I'm not so desperate to know, so I tend to be a year behind in my knowledge of what's going on.

And yes, [livejournal.com profile] paian and several other people were kind enough to wander over to my LJ and leave me comments there, so thanks for the the rec!

Whee! Okay, I'm racking my brain for fics where the pairing actually worked for me (since I think I'm slightly more pairing-inclined then you, but I'm still with you in the mostly gen camp).

First, SGA:
* People have already poked you at [livejournal.com profile] ltlj's Retrograde, so I won't, but I urge you to RUN over there and read it if you haven't. Some of the later stories in the series didn't do a lot for me personally, but the early ones are amazing. It's an AU with SGA and SG-1 characters where Atlantis didn't reconnect with Earth until three years in - might also be a good way to dip into SGA fic since it has some great SG-1 moments too. She also wrote the wonderful Deflection (http://ltlj.livejournal.com/240755.html).

* Your Cowboy Days are Over (http://www.butcheredart.net/Fiction/YourCowboyDays.html) by M (Gen, NC-17) is Sheppard focused (with a fair bit of Teyla) AU off season 2 and is long and FANTASTIC. This is the fic that made me start watching Stargate and it's even better now that I know what the hell this stargate thing is and who these Wraith people are...

* Visiting Hours (http://www.improvidence.net/visiting_hours.html) is John/Rodney slash however is one of those rare stories where I actually can believe the slash. And that's very, very, very unusual for me and John and Rodney.

* To Say a Sorry Sight (http://heylittleriver.livejournal.com/130668.html) is Elizabeth and Lorne gen - mostly an Elizabeth character study. I love it.

* Picture (http://cybersyd.livejournal.com/34487.html) is a great story about Radek and Rodney discussing faith after "Tao of Rodney"

* [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper is possibly my favorite SGA author. She writes mostly John and Rodney friendship, but has done some of the other characters really well too. Her website is here (http://friendshipper.laylalawlor.com/) and I particularly love Candle in the Dark (http://friendshipper.laylalawlor.com/candle.shtml) and Running on Empty (http://friendshipper.laylalawlor.com/running.shtml) (LOVE that one) for John and Rodney. Also, she wrote a great Sunday Tag (http://friendshipper.laylalawlor.com/longestmile.shtml). If you poke around her site you'll find some great team stuff, Ronon, Teyla, Carson, etc.

* For Teyla fic you might also check out [livejournal.com profile] tielan and you might look here (http://sgatlantislight.livejournal.com/83603.html) for a list of recced Teyal fics (this post links to Beckett and Ronon fics too).

SG-1 Pairings:
Sam/Daniel:

* Unreasonable (http://dith.popullus.net/sg1stories/unreasonable.html) by [livejournal.com profile] raqs. Yes this isn't very plotty and has (not very explicit) sex but I love it wholeheartedly. I think it might be the first Sam/Daniel piece I read and somehow it feels Right. It's a simple story with a Sam and Daniel who've known each other for a long time suddenly realizing how lonely they are sometimes and how much they care for each other and it's just done really well.

* [livejournal.com profile] zorb also writes great Sam/Daniel. Taste (http://www.geocities.com/zorb47/taste.html) is very good, messy season 7/8 S/D falling into each other with very bad timing. Then there is the S8 sequel Of Reality (http://www.geocities.com/zorb47/ofreality.html) when the things that are messy become explosive instead. And finally, Clinging as Condition (Bhava Rising) (http://lunatic-z.livejournal.com/12152.html#cutid1) is robot!Sam/robot!Daniel and is one of my favorite robot!SG-1 stories.

* Quantum Attraction (http://havocthecat.livejournal.com/178854.html) by [livejournal.com profile] havocthecat - dorkverse!Sam and Daniel first time. (might be pornier than you want but not pwp).

* And...there should be more but the list I'm looking at is mostly either friendship fics or more porny than I think you want...

Jack/Daniel
* A Heart For Every Fate (http://www.lyricalmagic.com/fate.html) by [livejournal.com profile] destina - AU from "Torment of Tantalus" - Jack and Daniel are stranded on Heliopolis. Possibly the only time I've believed Jack/Daniel completely.

* System of a Down (http://www.butcheredart.net/Fiction/SystemOfADown.html) by M. One of those fics that explores a different way Daniel could have descended. Mostly a fantastic gen-like story with blink-and-you'll-almost-miss-it Jack/Daniel. Okay, maybe a bit more than that.

* Half-Crazy (http://teand.livejournal.com/67208.html) - Okay, I admit the Jack/Daniel may be my least favorite part of this fic (not cause it's bad, but because I like the rest better), but I still love the fic. Daniel has to give up one memory of each of his teammates in order to set them free.

* [livejournal.com profile] paian has an amazing way with words and writes great Jack/Daniel, but it's often very porny. I don't think you'd be interested in her series of "Lost City" tags but you might try syllepsis (http://paian.livejournal.com/2084.html). Also her fic tag (http://paian.livejournal.com/85122.html#cutid1) to "Family Ties" is mostly SG-1 porn but made me hate the episode much less.

Sam/Jack
* It's dark (written for the dark ficathon) but I love [livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast's All We Need of Hell (http://surrealphantast.livejournal.com/285679.html).

* [livejournal.com profile] syxp wrote very believable, well-characterized Sam/Jack babyfic: Turn and Face the Strain (http://syxp.livejournal.com/19477.html).

Other Pairings

* [livejournal.com profile] pellucid has written some great Daniel/Janet. I really liked If you're thinking of leaving (you're leaving at a very bad time) (http://pellucid.livejournal.com/196753.html) (AU - fair warning that the author notes say "Only I could fix "Heroes" and make it even more depressing"). I also really remember liking some of [livejournal.com profile] grav_ity's Daniel/Janet but can't remember which ones specifically. They're all here (http://www.geocities.com/gravity_not_included/sg1dj.html).

* [livejournal.com profile] teaphile wrote Daniel/Rodney pre-Rising that somehow worked well for me. Stumbling Around (Underground) (http://teaphile.livejournal.com/294345.html)

* Switch (http://community.livejournal.com/oddball_sga/86656.html) is Daniel/John Sheppard and might be closer to PWP than you like, but it somehow worked for me.

* [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic is currently "not" writing a fantastic series (she refuses to call it a WiP) of an AU where clone-Jack (she calls him JD) gets together with a Cameron Mitchell who was left crippled after Antarctica. You can find them all at this fic tag: Take These Broken Wings (http://synecdochic.livejournal.com/tag/broken+wings) and her characters are just amazing.

* Downpour (http://www.littleheaven70.com/downpour.html) is Daniel/Vala set early S9 and the only fic I've found that plays with the idea of Qetesh having met Amaunet.

* The Dirt of Reaping and Sowing (http://salieri.bonuspoints.net/sowreap.html) by [livejournal.com profile] troyswann - Sam/Jack/Daniel (Teal'c exists later) apocafic. Long, intricate, amazing.

* I wanted to rec you "Wheel" by Brighid but I'm getting "URL not found" for the link I have. It's a stranded-offworld Sam/Jack/Daniel.

* I've yet to find a Cam/Teal'c that works for me (and isn't set during "Unending") (speaking of - when you go to [Bad username or site: friendshipper's @ livejournal.com] website, read her "Unending" tag) though it's a pairing that intrigues me. Cam/Daniel is my new shiny I like for some unknown reason, and yet I'm having trouble finding examples for you right now. Same for Sam/Vala.

and since you said self-pimps are okay, you've read my one Sam/Daniel piece but I'm still pretty happy with the (very plotty for porn) Jack/Elizabeth (http://abyssinia4077.livejournal.com/155252.html#cutid2) and Daniel/Sam/Jonas (http://abyssinia4077.livejournal.com/155252.html#cutid3) I wrote for the porn battle

*Speaking of Jack/Elizabeth! Ocean's Pull (http://havocthecat.livejournal.com/478875.html) by [livejournal.com profile] havocthecat sold me on the idea.

Bad LJ indeed!

I told you I was giving you lots of recs. I expect you'll like some of them and not like others but I figured there was a decent assortment here. Also, I just recced a pre-series Sheppard/Mitchell over at Pepper's that I found pretty interesting - not a pairing I included on this list.

Enjoy the read!

That Teal'c: PI vid... *dies* But Teal'c hats would have to get equal billing, or at least a 'Guest Starring' each week!

(Thanks for the other recs too - they'll give me some nice weekend reading)
